THE WOOD YARD
The Wood Yard was an important part of rural industry. The Museum’s yard has equipment dating from 1880 – 1940, including a rack saw bench with a circular blade dating from the 1920s, a horizontal rack saw bench, last worked at Ivory’s Farm, Cowfold and a 1952 Smith and Sons (Rodley) rail-mounted steam crane, from the Charlton sawmills near Chichester.
The steam crane is currently being restored to working order using the original drawings by a group of Amberley Museum volunteers, thanks to funding from the Association of Industrial Archaeology (The Association for Industrial Archaeology – Giving our past a future (industrial-archaeology.org)
