STATIONARY ENGINE COLLECTION

Small stationary engines were once commonplace on farms and in workshops where they powered a wide variety of machinery and plant.

The Museum’s collection demonstrates the development of the engine, and many of the exhibits are in working order.  There are two main exhibit areas – the Stationary Engine shed behind Humphrey’s Barn and the Municipal Engine House near to the Connected Earth Building. There are often other engines around the site, working various bits of machinery, such as the saw sharpening machine in the TATHS workshop or one of the saw benches in the Wood Yard.
